Wicked Woods

Today I turn 31 years old. What better way to celebrate than to write? I chose the villanelle format for its haunting effect.

The forest beckons and she can’t resist.

Treading barefoot over damp moss and stone,

Sighing with the trees, wandering through mist.

Her fiery hair shall tangle and twist

As she travels through the darkness alone.

The forest beckons and she can’t resist.

Sharp brambles and gnarled branches persist.

Despite her cloak she is chilled to the bone,

Sighing with the trees, wandering through mist.

They say a hideous creature exists;

A beastly king who sits on his dark throne.

The forest beckons and she can’t resist.

What horrifying phantasm is this,

In these evil woods where dark seeds are sown?

Sighing with the trees, wandering through mist.

Before she left we shared a parting kiss.

Gone was the wildest girl I’ve ever known.

The forest beckons and she can’t resist

Sighing with the trees, wandering through mist.

    • Thank you! It was inspired by good, evil, life’s battles in general, and lost love.

I went out for some great meals courtesy of loved ones, and enjoyed our nice weather. I tried to get some people together for a night at a retro dance club but various schedules didn’t work out.

  1. Oh wow! I love it! Don’t go when its pitch dark, or you won’t get far, you need a bit of moonlight to make it perfect! Lovely image and Happy Birthday dear blogger! ❤ ❤ 😀

  2. Aw, darn. I came too late to wish you happy birthday on your blog on your happy birthday so happy birthday 3 days after. Wow, 31. You have 34 more years to go before you start receiving thousands of letters attempting to trick you into buying medicare supplements. You can get a lot done in 34 years. Loved this poem and the picture goes with it perfectly. Is that a sly smile under that hood? I suspect I couldn’t resist disappearing in the forest mist either. My Dragon genes really like a dark misty forest. All the best to you, Lauren. I do hope this year is your year and it sets a precedence for all the years that follow. 🥂🍾

    • Ha, don’t even worry about it – you caught me on InstaG. I’m working on my “get rich quick” with writing scheme and there’s plenty of time. Thank you very much! Cheers! That is indeed a hint of a mischievous smile there under that hood. 😀 You’re a very observant dragon!
